More than 106,000 cases of colon cancer and 40,000 cases of rectal cancer were estimated by the American Cancer Society have been diagnosed in 2009. Only lung cancer kills more Americans.

Yet, you have more control over preventing colon cancer than any other type since of all cancers, colon cancer has the strongest links to diet, in terms of both cause and prevention. In fact, 90 percent of colorectal cancers are related to a poor diet. For a detailed discussion of how to prevent colon cancer, read my report "Colon Cancer: The Hidden Dangers."

In most cases, it takes decades of nutritional abuse before colon cancer develops. The first changes occur within special clusters of cells, called aberrant crypt foci, found in the lining of the colon. The more of these you have, the more likely you are to develop colon cancer.

Several nutrients have demonstrated the ability to suppress these precancerous cell clusters. They include:

• Curcumin. Found in turmeric that is a staple of Indian cuisine, this chemical is believed to account for the significantly lower incidence of colon cancer within the Indian population.

• Quercetin. Quercetin inhibits cancer-dependent enzymes, slows cancer-cell division, and stimulates spontaneous cancer-cell death (apoptosis).

• White tea. White tea contains EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which has been shown to significantly suppress colon cancer. To learn more about the many ways green tea can improve your health, read my report "Miracle Tea."

• DHA. DHA is a component of fish oil. My special report "Omega 3: Nature’s Miracle Panacea" explains how omega-3 oils not only suppress cancer but also help prevent depression and lower your risk of heart disease.

• Vitamin E. The mixed tocopherols with a high gamma-tocopheryl component have shown the most effectiveness in preventing colon cancer.

• Silymarin (milk thistle extract). Silymarin improves detoxification and protection of the liver and brain.

• Conjugated linolenic acid (CLA). This special oil regulates immunity and directly suppresses colon cancer formation.

• Calcium. Calcium suppresses colon cancer in those who maintain a high-fat diet.

• Ellagic acid. Ellagic acid is a flavonoid found in most berries, walnuts, pecans, pomegranate and muscadine grapes.

• N-butyrate (ButyrAid) N-butyrate is a short-chain oil that has been shown to inhibit the development of colon cancer as well as the growth of existing cancers.

For more information on fighting all types of cancer, read my special report "Prevent Cancer Before It's Too Late. ''
