Question: My son has been diagnosed with pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with streptococcal infections (PANDAS). He also has symptoms of mitochondrial dysfunction. Do you think it’s OK to give him alpha lipoic acid and turmeric for inflammation?
Dr. Blaylock's Answer:
PANDAS is an immune reaction in specific areas of the brain in response to systemic infections. The evidence suggests that anything that reduces inflammation, and especially excitotoxicity, reduces symptoms.
Curcumin, quercetin, luteolin, white tea catechins, silymarin, and hesperidin are at the top of the list for cutting inflammation and excitotoxicity. As for mitochondrial dysfunction, there are a number of supplements used to treat such disorders, such as R-lipoic acid, niacinamide, thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine, methylcobalamin, vitamin K, magnesium, and folate. It also is important to avoid excitotoxin additives in food such as monosodium glutamate (MSG).
