Question: Is it advisable for someone who had a heart bypass operation and is taking blood pressure medication to use hawthorn?

Dr. Blaylock's Answer:

In a number of studies, hawthorn has been shown to lower blood pressure. I have found that it is safer than most medications and it strengthens the heart muscle while reducing inflammation.

Lowering blood pressure takes a combination of things — diet change, hawthorn, magnesium, coenzyme Q10, and antioxidants. Diet change is critical. It's important to avoid omega-6 oils (vegetable oils), use extra-virgin olive oil, consume omega-3 oils, eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day, avoid having more than 6 ounces of meat a day (choose white meat over red meat), and refrain from high sugar intake and all caffeine.

Antioxidants such as vitamin C, natural E, and B vitamins have been shown to lower blood pressure. A number of flavonoids appear to lower blood pressure and protect the heart as well including: curcumin, quercetin, hesperidin, ellagic acid, and luteolin.
