Question: My wife was been feeling depressed for some time so she mentioned it to her primary care physician when she went in for a check-up. The doctor prescribed an antidepressant for her, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Why not?

Dr. Amen's Answer:

We have discovered that depression and anxiety are not single disorders that occur separately but rather are a cluster of closely related disorders. Using SPECT scans, we have identified seven subtypes of depression and anxiety. Understanding the specific type of depression or anxiety a person has is critical to getting the most effective treatment.

On the other hand, taking a cookie-cutter approach to treating depression can be not only ineffective but also dangerous. Depending on the type of depression your wife has certain antidepressants may actually make her symptoms worse. I would recommend seeking help from a qualified mental health professional.
