Question: Are there any natural treatments I can try for erectile dysfunction?
Dr. Amen's Answer:
I used to say, “Whatever is good for your heart is good for your brain, and whatever is bad for your heart is bad for your brain.” After I wrote my book and PBS special The Brain In Love, I realized I was missing a very important part. Now I say, “Whatever is good for your heart is good for your brain is good for your genitals, and whatever is bad for your heart is bad for your brain is bad for your genitals.”
It’s all about blood flow. Your brain gets 25 percent of the blood flow in your body. Anything that decreases blood flow damages both your brain and your ability to make love. Many people have blood flow problems. In one study, 40 percent of 40-year-olds and 70 percent of 70-year-olds had erectile dysfunction, which means that 40 percent of 40-year-olds and 70 percent of 70-year-olds also had brain dysfunction.
To be a great lover you have to protect your blood flow. Eliminate anything that decreases blood flow, such as smoking or drinking too much caffeine. Treating illnesses that negatively affect blood flow, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes also will help. Exercise also boosts blood flow to your heart, your brain, and everywhere else, and it tones your body, which makes you feel sexier.
