Gluten Sensitivity: Is It a Real Disease?

Gluten is commonly present in a number of processed foods that we consume on a day-to-day basis. It’s a protein composite that increases the elasticity of dough and helps shape it. Gluten is not present in corn, rice, or oats but is naturally present in wheat, rye, and barley.
 
In people sensitive to it, various intraintestinal symptoms and extraintestinal symptoms can be visible. What could happen because of gluten sensitivity?
 
Gluten sensitivity can increase the permeability of intestinal cells and thereby cause toxicity. Since the intestinal cells are permeable, they begin to allow wastes and toxic products to be absorbed and recirculated into the blood stream instead of being flushed out of the body.
In addition, the cells in the intestine widen, which creates gaps and leads to a leaky gut. In this manner, gluten sensitivity could cause celiac disease. In celiac disease, the celia present in the inner lining of the intestine starts allowing toxic byproducts to re-enter the body.
 
In extreme cases, gluten sensitivity could also lead to irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease. Research also shows that gluten sensitivity is not the sole cause for celiac disease and irritable bowel syndrome. There is a lot of controversy surrounding the question whether gluten sensitivity is itself the actual cause for a number of intestinal disorders. Some researchers argue that this sensitivity is only a myth and that it does not lead to the diseases affecting the intestine.
 
The symptoms commonly experienced by people with gluten sensitivity and celiac disease are bloating, abdominal pain, stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, muscular disturbance. joint pain. sleep disturbance, vertigo, and headache. Though abdominal discomfort, constipation, and diarrhea may be the more common symptoms, vertigo and sleep disturbance are symptoms seen only in adverse cases.
 
How to treat gluten sensitivity? The solution to treating symptoms of gluten sensitivity is to eat gluten-free food. Eating food rich in fiber and vitamins while avoiding processed food made of wheat and barley can help alleviate the symptoms of gluten sensitivity.
