Antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections. Farmers started using antibiotics in livestock management when they discovered that animal antibiotics promote rapid weight gain. Animal antibiotics have been used for years. However, scientists are now discovering the dangers associated with animal antibiotics. Use of antibiotics in livestock may cause some dreaded diseases in humans. Moreover, with the use of animal antibiotics, resistant bacteria strains develop, causing dangers in disease treatment. Use of antibiotics in meat has become an issue fraught with dangers for public health.
 
People concerned about a total ban on animal antibiotics believe a ban on antibiotics in livestock would adversely affect the poultry and livestock industry and raise the cost of meat. Due to this, farmers and scientists have made contradictory arguments on the use of animal antibiotics. If overuse of antibiotics in livestock can affect the health of animals, antibiotics in meat can affect humans, too. Dangers associated with antibiotics in livestock are considered high due to the interference of animal antibiotics in possible drug treatment that may be required as animal antibiotics may make the bacteria resistant to the available drugs. Overuse of antibiotics in meat may create new dangers for many lives.
 
It is estimated that huge amounts of animal antibiotics are used by the meat and poultry industry. Studies have found that using antibiotics in livestock only enhances growth but do not prevent diseases. Overuse of antibiotics in meat has been found to cause fatal diseases that are difficult to cure with available medicines. Farmers in the poultry industry use antibiotics in livestock to treat animals and prevent the risk of diseases. Nevertheless, it has been observed that they rely heavily on using antibiotics in livestock that can cause dangers to the animals as well as to the humans consuming them.
 
Experts have warned about the dangers of using antibiotics in meat as many strains of bacteria have become resistant to antibiotics. Excessive use of animal antibiotics results in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. There are dangers that humans may consume these resistant bacteria, especially if the meat is not washed, processed, or cooked properly.

Diseases like mad cow and bird flu have created dangers for thousands of people due to use of antibiotics in meat. Dangers arising from the overuse of antibiotics in livestock have become serious and need to be regulated. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics in meat has been banned in European countries. Use of penicillin and other antibiotics in livestock has been restricted in the U.S. The World Health Organization is also concerned about antibiotic resistance due to the use of antibiotics in meat. It is recommended that antibiotics in meat be used judiciously.
