Inspired by the toned arms of Michelle Obama, Jennifer Aniston, and Jessica Biel, the latest US trend in plastic surgery is arm lifts to remove excess skin and fat on the upper arms. The procedure has skyrocketed by more than 4,000 percent in the last 10 years in the U.S.

New statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) on April 29 show that arm lifts have surged in popularity -- in 2000, more than 300 women sought out the procedure, while last year, more than 15,000 did. Arm lift procedures cost around $4,000, with a total of $61 million spent on the surgery in the U.S. The vast majority of patients are women over 40 years old.

"Women are paying more attention to their arms in general and are becoming more aware of options to treat this area," said ASPS president Gregory Evans, M.D. "For some women, the arms have always been a troublesome area and, along with proper diet and exercise, liposuction can help refine them. Others may opt for a brachioplasty when there is a fair amount of loose skin present with minimal elasticity."

An online poll conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of the ASPS found that women most admired the arms of Michelle Obama followed by Aniston, Biel, Demi Moore, and television talk show host Kelly Ripa. The poll included 1,219 women and was conducted March 28-April 1.

"I think we are always affected by the people that we see consistently, either on the big screen or on TV," said ASPS public education committee chair David Reath, M.D. "We see them and think, 'yeah, I'd like to look like that'."
