Katie Pumphrey, 26, has learned that exercising to the point of exhaustion helps relieve the chronic pain from the neuromuscular disease that has no known cure. But now she is taking her practice of regular, intense exercise much further: She plans to swim the English Channel in August.

“I do think I can do it,” she tells The Washington Post. “I like the reality [that] there’s still a chance that I can’t. That’s the monster of the channel.”
