The vast majority of older baby boomers are overweight or obese, according to a new U.S. Census Bureau report.

Obesity rates continue to rise despite the fact that aging baby boomers are drinking and smoking less, the report shows.

Of Americans 65 and older, 72 percent of men and 67 percent of women are overweight or obese, according to a Time magazine report. Baby boomers started reaching age 65 in 2011.

Excess weight causes a wide range of health problems, including diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. This raises questions about how well baby boomers will handle the infirmities of age – and how they’ll pay for it.

The Census Bureau report shows that many baby boomers are not financially prepared to pay for long-term care.

There is no clear strategy about how to combat obesity in older people, Dr. Adam Bernstein, research director at the Cleveland Clinic’s Wellness Institute, tells Time.

“There are not many studies of weight loss among the elderly,” he said. “The prescription would not be the same for a middle-aged person or youth.”

Experts say the findings of the report show that it’s important to address obesity early in life.
