Comedian Rosie O'Donnell says she underwent weight-loss surgery in July and has lost 40 pounds.
"I did it to save my life," the former talk show host told an audience at a luncheon in Detroit on Friday sponsored by the American Heart Association.
O'Donnell, 51, suffered a heart attack in 2012. Afterward, she tried dieting, but she was unable to lose weight and also had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and was prediabetic.

After undergoing vertical gastric sleeve surgery last summer she has gone from 230 pounds to 190. The procedure closes about 80 percent of the stomach, making it impossible to eat big meals.
O'Donnell's spokeswoman Cindi Berger said: "She tried to lose weight (without surgery), but it wasn't working. It was a lifesaving surgery. But it's only a tool, not a cure."
