Actress Dame Judi Dench, 78, faces the same problems as many senior citizens — her memory isn't quite as sharp as she would like. The work she loves is especially demanding on her memory, requiring her to memorize dozens of pages of script. But, she says, she sometimes has difficulty remembering her lines. Her solution, she told the U.K.'s "The Week," is to take fish oil tablets daily.

Dame Judi takes an over-the-counter brand called Eye Q, which contains omega-3 fatty acids sourced from sardines, anchovies, and pilchards (a member of the herring family). A single capsule contains 92 mg of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 29 mg of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

Studies back up Dame Judi's belief that fish oil can help a flagging memory. A 2009 study studied healthy people aged 55 and older who were suffering from "age-related complaints." Those who took fish oil supplements for six months had "almost double the reduction in errors on a test that measures learning and memory performance," compared with those who took a placebo.
