"This country has an epidemic of chronic diseases," says John E. Lewis, Ph.D., an associate professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. "Millions of people suffer from Alzheimer's, heart disease, diabetes and other deadly diseases, but the answer to our health woes is within reach. Three steps will harness the power of nutrition and allow our bodies to be healthy, and to shake the most lethal diseases including Alzheimer's and cancer," he tells Newsmax Health.
ALERT: 5 Signs You’ll Get Alzheimer’s Disease
Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine said, "Let food be your medicine and medicine be thy food," but we've strayed far from that principle says Lewis. In truth, he says, there are three steps that lead to vibrant health:
1. Eat a whole-food, mostly plant-based diet.
2. Exercise every single day
3. Supplement with nutrients not found in abundance in the modern diet.
Using the power of nutrition is the main path to health, says Lewis. Yet, many people believe health is found in a pill bottle. "If you don't realize how important a healthy diet is to your overall health, it's probably due to all of the money pharmaceutical companies have spent on advertising to convince you that drugs are important to your health," he says.
"Healthcare doesn't mean taking pharmaceuticals," he says. "It means caring for our health. Pharmaceuticals are used to treat and mitigate chronic disease."
Even if you have a family history of disease, your genes don't doom you to develop Alzheimer's, cancer, or other deadly disease just because of your genes, according to Lewis. And if you are sick, your genes aren't to blame. "You are not a prisoner of your genes — that idea is an absolute fallacy."
Genes are similar to a gun, he says. Genes don't do any damage on their own until they are "triggered" by outside forces. "Genes can do nothing until they take in information from the environment — then they do something. We hope they do something good for us and aren't expressed as disease.
"There is no magic pill from Harvard or Yale that will prevent or reverse conditions that are the result of 20 or 30 years of bad behavior on our part," he says. "You have to manage what you do every single day.
ALERT: 5 Signs You’ll Get Alzheimer’s Disease
"70 percent of our population is either overweight or obese," Lewis says. "This is a very recent phenomena. Our genes just didn't decide over the past 50 or 60 years that it's time for us to get fat and sick.
"The rise in obesity parallels the rise in the fast food industry. We are now overfed and undernourished," he says. Even much "healthy" food, if it's not organic, has been genetically modified and treated with herbicides and pesticides. "Our food is not what it used to be." Poor diets cause inflammation in the body, and inflammation is known to be a cause of many chronic diseases.
Lewis and his colleagues have been studying monosaccharides — the simplest forms of sugar that are the basic units of carbohydrates. "We know they are very important to the foundation of our health," he said.
One particular type of sugar Lewis and his colleague, Dr. Reg McDaniel, have been studying is mannose, and have found that aloe vera contains high amounts. They freeze-dried aloe gel and concentrated the active ingredient into a product (aloe polymannose multinutrient complex or APMC), and then began giving it to patients who had been told by traditional medicine that they were terminal. "We give mannose in high amounts that aren't usually in the normal diet.
"One patient had gone through all the usual steps of chemotherapy and radiation and had metastatic tumors throughout his body," said Lewis. "He was sent to hospice to die," The patient began taking monosaccharides in 1999 and one year later, the tumors shrank drastically. This man is alive today."
But perhaps the biggest breakthrough has been in treating Alzheimer's patients.
"If you haven't already been affected by someone with Alzheimer's disease, you probably will," says Lewis. "We are an aging population and there are going to be many more people with Alzheimer's, and there is no treatment and no cure.
"We took a sample of people with moderate to severe Alzheimer's and put them on the monosaccharides. After 9 to 12 months, they started having improvements in memory and cognitive function.
"Show me something else like that," Lewis says. "The best that drugs can do is to delay decline for a couple of months. We actually had people coming out of the 'ether.' We actually had people coming back — remembering their sons and daughters, and remembering their spouses. It gives me chills — it's powerful stuff.
"This isn't medical heresy," he says. "It's giving the body the raw materials it needs to function properly. This is allowing the body to do what it is intended to do, and it is much more fundamental than treating the body with drugs.
"We've taken the debate over embryonic stem cells out of the equation," he says. "We've shown that the monosaccharides stimulate the proliferation of your own stem cells. There's no need for embryonic cells. Monosaccharides also reduced inflammation.
"There is nothing else like it for people with Alzheimer's," Lewis says.
You are capable of being the master of your own health, he says. "It's up to you. All you have to do is decide that healthcare is something you do every single day. You have the power."
