Question: I suffer every night from pain in my hips and legs. Is there anything I can take to make it go away?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
Pains in hips and legs may come from a number of causes, including poor circulation, inflammation, and arthritis, to name just a few. Doctors used to recommend quinine for leg cramps, but it is no longer advised because the risks outweigh the benefits.
We do now have superb diagnostic methods that can usually define the cause(s) of pain quite accurately. Ask your doctor about your options and, in the meantime, watch your diet and see if you notice a relationship between what you eat (including any supplements you take) and your pain.
Consider using a NSAID such as Motrin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen each night time at a dose recommended by your physician. But first get the approval of your doctor. People who do not eat enough fruits and vegetables sometimes have vitamin and nutrient deficiencies that can cause aches and pains. Try eliminating nicotine and alcohol.
If you take non-prescription supplements, ask your doctor whether to continue them or not. Many problems may be actually precipitated by poor dietary habits.
