Question: I have an enlarged thyroid and am cold all the time. Are these two things related, and can I do anything about it?
Dr. Hibberd's answer:
The presence of an enlarged thyroid gland (termed a goiter) should always be evaluated by your doctor. Your thyroid function will be checked by a blood test and an ultrasound to confirm whether you have a generalized enlargement from a goiter or whether the enlargement you are noticing is from a tumor pushing your gland to becoming more prominent.
Cold intolerance is associated with underactive thyroid conditions (called hypothyroidism). Some patients with hypothyroidism have a goiter, but you must also realize that goiters are associated with overactive thyroid conditions (called hyperthyroidism).
So the answer to whether your two conditions are related will need to come from your personal physician.
