Are Garlic Pills Risky for the Heart?

Question: My husband has started taking garlic capsules because he says it is good for the heart. Do you think they will do any good, harm?

Dr. Hibberd's answer:

There is anecdotal evidence that garlic may help ward off heart disease, but this has not risen to the level of proof seen with fish oil use.  The bad news is garlic pills can cause bad breath and be noticed in perspiration.
 
Also, garlic pill supplement use has not been shown to be any better than consuming natural garlic.
