Question: I am a woman in my 40s and I have suddenly put on 10 pounds and I always feel tired. Could this be thyroid disease?

If you're not very active, you don't burn as many calories. With a sedentary lifestyle, you can easily take in more calories every day, and put on weight. Having a diet that's high in calories, eating fast food, skipping breakfast, eating most of your calories at night, drinking high-calorie beverages and eating oversized portions all contribute to weight gain.
Getting less than seven hours of sleep a night can cause changes in hormones that increase your appetite. Some medications can lead to weight gain if you don't compensate through diet or activity. Weight gain also leads to lethargy, and feeling tired.
Many medical conditions are also associated with weight gain and fatigue, and an under-functioning thyroid gland is one of them. You need to visit your doctor who will order tests to identify the underlying problem for your current weight gain and fatigue, and a management plan for the same.
