Question: What is the best nasal decongestant for a child under the age of 2 years?

Dr. Hibberd’s answer:

Do not use topical chemical or oral nasal decongestants for your child. Use a vaporizer (cool mist) and supplement this with nasal saline drops. A household humidifier may be needed during the wintertime.

The nasal saline drops can be administered two drops at a time, on each side, as often as needed without harm. Fever or failure to improve within a day or two should be brought to your physician's attention.
