Question: I’ve read somewhere that traumatic brain injury or overexposure to X-rays can cause or aggravate hypothyroidism. Is there a way for the associated glands to heal?
Dr. Brownstein’s Answer:
Brain injury can damage the pituitary/hypothalamus glands, which stimulate the thyroid
gland to produce thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland is very sensitive to radiation. It is best to use a lead apron that covers the thyroid area when getting dental or chest X-rays to minimize radiation exposure to the thyroid.
If the thyroid has been damaged from either trauma or radiation, there are steps you can take to repair it. Supplying the thyroid with healthy nutrients will aid its recovery. Ensuring adequate iodine intake also can help optimize thyroid function.
