Question: Is there a supplement that can capture in the body a significant portion of the mercury contained in certain seafoods?

Dr. Brownstein's Answer:

Mercury poisons hundreds of enzymes in the body and is also a neurotoxin. It has been linked to many serious illnesses such as coronary artery disease, congestive heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and cancer.

Over the last 20 years, I have tested every patient who walks into my office for mercury toxicity and more than 80 percent of new patients have tested positive.

To minimize mercury exposure from seafood, I have found taking alpha lipoic acid (300 mg) at the beginning of the meal can effectively bind the mercury in seafood and allow for its excretion. Having said that, it is still best to avoid seafood with very high mercury levels, such as tuna and swordfish.
