Newer research has shown that the supplement silymarin in a dose of 200 mg, three times a day, can significantly relieve the symptoms, which can include abdominal pain, blood in stool, diarrhea, and unexplained fever.
Soluble fiber products also help, both as a prebiotic and in the production of short-chain fatty acids. In addition, omega-3 oils high in DHA reduce bouts of ulcerative colitis.
