Former child actress Hayley Mills says she beat breast cancer with alternative remedies after quitting chemotherapy because it was “killing me.’’
The star of the classic family movies “The Parent Trap’’ and “Pollyanna’’ told Britain’s Daily Mirror that she began chemo when she was first diagnosed in 2008, but stopped after just three treatments.
“It made me feel awful. I was more frightened of the chemo than the cancer,’’ Mills, 66, told the newspaper. “I could feel it draining and killing me. I felt I was dying.”
Following surgery, the actress began alternative treatments, including radically changing her diet.
She eliminated sugar, dairy products and foods high in acid she felt would “feed’’ the cancer. And she also began exercise and meditation programs.
“I always say a tremendous amount of healing is in your own hands,’’ Mills, now in remission, told the Mirror. “What you can do to boost your immune system and what you can do to keep your mind, body and soul healthy and positive is important.”
She said the decision to go the alternative route is not for everybody, but “there are some fantastic, brilliant alternative doctors out there. It doesn’t make sense that there is only one way of dealing with cancer.”
Mills, who now appears in the TV series “Wild at Heart’’ told Good Housekeeping earlier this year that when she was first diagnosed, “it was an enormous shock. Suddenly, I looked out at the world as if I'd never seen it before. ''
“Everything felt clearer and sharper. And when you hear that diagnosis, you realize, ‘Now I'm going to find out what I'm actually made of.’’’
